Lawrence graduated from Garden City High School in 1936 and Garden City Community College in 1938. During his high school years he started playing with the Garden City Municipal Band and continued to do so for over 40 years. While in high school he started working for the post office where he hung the mail sack so the train could pull it off the hooks without stopping. He was stationed in Hawaii and involved in mail delivery for the Army and then was part of the Okinawa Invasion. He and Norma met in high school and exchanged letters while he was in the service and they were married 6 weeks after his discharge. He was a Boy Scout Leader for 32 years. As part of the bicentennial celebration of 1976 he was asked to visit Washington D.C. to have his troop perform demonstrations. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for his work with the Scouts. Both of his sons became Eagle Scouts and Lawrence was able to present one of his grandsons his Eagle Badge. He enjoyed music and carpentry. With a little help he built the house they lived in for over 60 years. In his church he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir.
