Joan Ortiz, 74, a loving mother, devoted Grandma and hardworking entrepreneur, passed away unexpectedly Monday June 4, 2012. A resident of Cocoa Beach since 1970. Joan was born in Woodlawn, Virginia, July 5, 1937, and after a difficult childhood, married the love of her life - Bob Ortiz in 1956 in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

A recipient of a drama/theater scholarship to Catawba College in North Carolina, Joan aspired to be a singer, but she also minored in accounting studies and was a born businesswoman. Moving to Cocoa Beach with her family in the 1970's, she always said coming over that bridge with the sun glistening, that she was entering "God's Country", the most beautiful place on earth – Cocoa Beach.

A stay at home mom for many years, when Bob was stricken with multiple sclerosis, she tirelessly worked to support her family and provide a future for her children. Having struggled much of her young life, she felt it was very important to own real estate if possible, so when she could, she invested in Cocoa Beach. Joan not only accumulated property over the years, but also many special relationships with her tenants whom she considered her friends.

Joan was a lifelong learner and volunteer, as well as a successful self-made business woman. She owned various businesses through the years including A1A Accounting, Flite Technology, and until her death - Advanced Technologies Worldwide of Port Canaveral. She was especially proud of her warehouse property in Port Canaveral which she struggled to keep active and rented through all the ups and downs of the economy.

Joan relished her role as "Grandma" delving into many roles throughout the years as a volunteer and fierce supporter of our Cocoa Beach schools, Girl Scouts of America (Cookie chair for many years for the Beach Service Unit), and most recently a fervent believer in the "obligation to vote", volunteering as clerk for her assigned Cocoa Beach voting precinct. Joan was also a supporter of many animal rescue groups.

A selfless devotee of family and friends, Joan leaves many of us behind broken hearted and missing her constant care, friendship and guidance. Joan is survived by her daughter Debra (Arsenio) Concepcion of Cocoa Beach, Julie (Francisco) Pinto of Lahaina, Hawaii, grandchildren Kali, Gabriela, Natalia, Alex and Isabella. Her loving aunt and "real" mother – Mrs. Celene Sanders of Roanoke [Radford], Virginia and favorite niece/nephew Paddy & Tracey Kennedy of Alpharetta Georgia.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Robert and loving sister, Jackie.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home of Cocoa Beach. You may sign Joan's guestbook at www.beckman-williamson.com.
