Hungarian and Bohemian Monarch. German Empress. She was the only surviving child of Emperor Sigismund and his wife Barbara of Cilli. At the age of two, she was engaged to the twelve years older Duke Albrecht V of Austria. They were married in 1422 and her father named Albrecht his successor in the following year. In 1437 her husband succeeded her father as German King and King of Hungary and Bohemia. When her husband died she acted as regent for her unborn son. After his birth, she was able to have him crowned with the Saint Stephens crown. The polish nobles crowned Wladyslaw of Poland instead, as they feared the Ottoman Empire. After two years of civil war, the papal envoy Giuliano Cesarini was able to negotiate a peace contract. Wladyslaw and Elisabeth met in November 1442 in Gyor to exchange gifts. She died three days after he left Gyor and was buried beside her husband. It was rumoured that Wladyslaw had had her poisoned.
