"Dr. W.P. Bone Dies at Lebanon, Former Cumberland U. Head Pneumonia Victim; Rites To Be Saturday"


Lebanon, Tennessee, February 12 -- (Special) -- Dr. Winstead Paine Bone, 80, professor of Bible and ethics at Cumberland University since 1914 and former president of the university, died at 9 o'clock tonight of pneumonia. He had been ill for some time and underwent a major operation about two months ago. Pneumonia developed recently. Dr. Bone died at McFarland Hospital.


Dr. Bone, a native of Douglass, Texas, had been a resident of Lebanon for about a half century. For years, he was dean of the Cumberland Theological School, which was discontinued some years ago and for several years he was a minister of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.

He also was a member of the National Association of Bible Instructors.


In 1932 an honorary degree was bestowed upon him by the university.


He attended Trinity University in Texas and received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees there. Later, he attended Cumberland and received his Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity degrees there.


He had traveled extensively in Europe and studied there.


Survivors Listed


He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. S. B. Gilreath, Lebanon, wife of the Wilson County judge, Mrs. G. S. Crowe, Goodlettsville, and a son, Winstead Paine Bone, Jr., Lebanon.


Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A, here. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Full arrangements had not been completed late tonight.
