Clarence Marvin McGill of Greensboro, NC, age 80, owner and Chairman of the Board, McGill Inc. dba Carolina American Tours, died at his home on Sunday, January 2, 2011.

He was born January 14, 1930, in High Point, NC to the late Tracy and Hettie Yarborough McGill. He attended Georgia Military Academy in Atlanta, GA and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He grew up and continued to work for the business his father began in the 1930's, McGill's Taxi and Bus Lines, Inc. in Asheboro, NC. The company provided various transportation services to area residents including running a shuttle during the depression throughout the community to and from local factories for those who had no other means to travel to and from their jobs. The company name was later changed to McGill, Inc. dba Asheboro Coach Company. Their office was originally located in downtown Asheboro providing taxi service, charter bus service and was a scheduled stop for Trailways and Greyhound with regular route service all over the United States for passengers and freight. They were also known for being one of the first companies in the area to provide motorcoach packaged tours to a variety of tourist attractions. Clarence acquired other companies located in Fayetteville, Wilson, Greensboro and Salisbury, NC and at one time was the largest privately owned motorcoach operator in the Southeast. The consolidation of these companies resulted in another name change to McGill, Inc. dba Carolina American Tours. Clarence never held another job during his lifetime.

Clarence was a dedicated Shriner, 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Jester Club and regularly donated services to support Shriners Hospitals for Children. He was also a long standing member of both the Masonic Lodge #699 and Kiwanis Club of Asheboro. He was an avid supporter of the North Carolina Motorcoach Association of which his father was a founding member in 1945. He served on the Board of Directors for many years and a term as President in 1993.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Martha, two daughters and their husbands, Rhonda and Steve Routh of Asheboro, Phyllis and Dwight Phillips of Tannersville, VA, step-daughter, Diana Lynch of Greensboro, step-son Ron Cook of Winston-Salem, five grandchildren, Derek Routh, Benjamin Routh, Travis Phillips, Mandy Pasour and Keana Lynch, two great-grandchildren Emmali and Addisyn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Archie McGill and many other beloved family members.

Relatives and friends are welcome at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave, Asheboro on Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00pm. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, January 6th, at Central United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Key, Senior Pastor officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery following the service.
