John Cook was born November 27, 1848 and departed this life December 8, 1936 at the age of 88 years and ten days. He came to Oklahoma in 1900 and for the last eight years he has made his home in Cleveland, OK. He united with the Baptist Church in 1872, was ordained as a deacon in 1902 and has been a deacon for thirty five years.
He was true to his conviction, faithful to his Lord and loved and respected by all who knew him. Even in his hours of suffering he was brave, patient and peaceful in the love of his Savior. His life was an open testimony of the power of God to save and keep the soul entrusted to Him.
The surviving children are: Mrs. Luther Galey, Holdenville, OK; Mrs. J.T. Berry, Cleveland, OK; O.W. Cook, Strong City, OK; Mrs. J.M. Hawkins, Durham, OK; Mrs. V.A. Watson, Edmond, OK. John Cook, father of Mrs. E.E. Casady of near Strong City, with whom he had been residing, passed away early Tuesday morning, after having suffered for a period of several months from cancer. Mr. Cook came to Roger Mills County in 1900 and lived in this county until the early 1920s, when he moved to Cleveland, where he resided most of the time until about a year ago.
Funeral Services were conducted in the Baptist Church of Strong City, Wednesday afternoon with Rev. J.W. Carlton of Cheyenne, preaching the funeral sermon, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Cheyenne Cemetery by those of his wife, who preceded him in death several years ago. The Odd Fellows Lodge of Hammon had charge of the burial ceremony. Mr. Cook had been a member of the Odd Fellows organization for twenty-six years.
Mr. Cook was a quiet, unassuming person, against whom no person could say aught. All who knew him loved and respected him, as was shown by the number of friends who gathered together to pay last respects to his memory and the large floral offering.
