Our beloved Gloria Lou Hackett (Maday) left this earth on August 31, 2012. Gloria fought so courageously against an extremely rare form of cancer that originated in her appendix. She never waivered from her belief that she would beat this thing ; she never once cried.
Gloria grew up in East Chain, MN on a beautiful farm. She was part of a large, close knit, Polish Catholic family, she once stated she had 49 first cousins. Gloria was the second of 4 children, she has 2 brothers and one sister remaining. Gloria graduated from East Chain School in the spring of 1962 and pursued a career as a cosmetologist. She would tell stories of her years living in the Twin Cities and how much she enjoyed her co-workers and customers.
Gloria married Jeff Hackett on April 1, 1967 – no foolin. Four years prior to that day, Jeff walked into a dance, saw Gloria and told his friend that he was going to marry that girl. He got up the courage to ask her to dance the very last song of the night – The Do Run Run. They celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary this year.
Gloria and Jeff moved with 2 small children to the Walker area in 1972 and made it their permanent home. For many years Gloria was the manager of Northern Exposure gift shop in Walker. Not only was it her work, it was her social network as well – she loved interacting with her coworkers, customers and sales reps . She was always so interested in everyone's story. Jan and the girls were her best of friends and she enjoyed getting together away from work and the occasional casino night. For a few years Gloria and Jeff lived in Fargo where she decorated a beautiful home and hosted so many special times with family – but she was glad to get back to the lake.
Gloria rarely sat still and enjoyed so many hobbies – gardening, cooking, decorating, feeding the birds, painting, knitting, cross-stitching, searching for treasures in thrift shops, playing with her grandchildren and chatting with friends and family. This year we have spent more time together as a family than we ever have – it has been horrifically beautiful year. Gloria's 3 daughters always adored her but truly got to know her through her journey – they talked and talked and laughed and talked some more. Jeff and Gloria also became closer when their roles were reversed and he became the caregiver – a role he played very well.
Gloria was and will remain so special to her friends and family. She was always smiling and had the best sense of humor and laugh. Some of our best laughs were in the hospital. Gloria was very selfless, affectionate and loving. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother – oh how she loved her grandchildren!
Gloria is survived by her loving husband Jeffrey Hackett, her 3 adoring daughters Holly Hackett-Rich (Duane) of Duluth, Heidi Fagerman (Gary) of Pillager, Katie Thompson (Chris) of Walker. Granchildren Samantha, Alexander, Evan, Matthew, Maggie and Maya. Brothers AJ Maday of CA, Gary Maday (Ardyce)of East Chain and sister Joan Olson (Harlan) of Fridley and numerous nieces and nephews. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Vi Maday.
Funeral Mass will be held at St Agnes Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 1 p.m. There will be a luncheon at the church to follow.
