Stanford, California - Dr. Joseph Garrett Allen, 79, an expert on blood, died January 10, of pneumonia.
He was former chairman of the department of surgery at Stanford University's Medical School.
He conducted research on blood plasma, AIDS, radiation sickness and the nutritional value of intravenous plasma.
He also served as a staff physician of the Manhattan Project, the World War II effort to build the atom bomb.
