Death of George W. Polk
The death of George Washington Polk, one of the oldest and best known residents of Pleasant township, occurred at the family home in Greenwood on Wednesday morning about 7:00.
Mr. Polk was born in Kentucky in 1816 and came to Indiana when a young man, settling near Evansville and later at Princeton. He removed with his family to Johnson county in 1861, locating near Greenwood. In his early life he was a cabinet maker and undertaker but upon his removal to this county took up farm life and held large farming interests in the county. Of late years he has been identified with his son, J. T. Polk, in the canning business.
Mr. Polk was married to Miss Mary Embry and to them nine children were born, of whom five survive, J. T. Polk, William Polk, Perry Polk, Mrs. Frank J. Jones and Mrs. Grafton Peek.
During his long and active career, Mr. Polk was honored and respected by a large circle of friends. His life was one of honesty and integrity and his word always trusted and relied upon by those whom he advised.
The funeral will be held at the late home near Greenwood this morning at 10:00. The services will be conducted by Dr. W. T. Stott, of Franklin. The remains will be buried in Greenwood cemetery under the direction of D. Peek.
