Dallis Joseph Christensen
SALT LAKE CITY - Dallis "Red" Joseph Christensen, age 96, one of the "Greatest Generation", passed on August 30, 2012. He joined his sweetheart "June" of 69 ½ years, just 20 days after her passing. Dallis was born in a log cabin in Bear River City, Utah, on October 8, 1915 the 1st of nine children to Karen "Carrie" Sorine Andersen and Joseph "Joe" Christian Christensen. Raised on a farm with a strong work ethic, he was destined to leave his humble mountain home for a mighty work and a heroic legacy.
In 1932, just after Dallis' 17th birthday his father died, leaving his young mother with 6 living children and a baby on the way. In the heart of the "Great Depression", Dallis stepped bravely into his role as man of the house. Forsaking high school, he joined the Navy and sent each monthly paycheck home to his mother. He climbed the ranks, becoming a radioman, eventually earning his "wings" as a naval pilot. During WWII, he patrolled the Panama Canal and surrounding seas in his PBY. He then flew submarine patrol in the Bahamas protecting troop transports to North Africa. His final war duty was in Wildwood, NJ as a test pilot and trainer for squadrons headed to the Pacific theater. He also flew the Berlin Airlift. During his distinguished US Naval career, he rose from Seaman Apprentice to Commander.
Dallis married Talma June Dickson on Feb. 15, 1943. They became parents of 4 daughters and 1 son. In 1951 the Navy paid for 2 yrs. of college. He attended the U of U taking 30 hrs. a quarter to graduate with his Bachelor Degee. At the same time during weekends and school breaks he moved his mother's existing home off the farm into town, adding extra rooms and amenities where she lived comfortably until her death.
In 1958 after Navy retirement, they settled permanently in SLC. From 1958-67 Dallis worked for the LDS Church as head of the Membership Department. From 1967-91 he taught electronics and computer science at Utah Technical College which became Salt Lake Community College. In 1973 he earned his Master's in Computer Science from Utah State Univ. From 1975-77 he took a sabbatical from SLCC with World Bank to establish 3 technical colleges in the Philippines. During his tireless retirement, he submitted over 1200 family names for LDS temple work, performing much of the work himself. He also skied until he was 81 yrs. old!
A faithful member of LDS Church, Dallis held many leadership positions throughout the USA and in the SLC East Millcreek 4th Ward and Mt. Olympus 22nd ward. He is survived by his 5 children; Linda (Ray) Seely, Cheryl (Bill) Zurcher, Janet (Frank) Lewis, Kris (John) Berg and Dallis (Carolyn) Christensen, 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren. Brothers; Clyde (Shirley) and Hardy (Marty) Christensen, sisters; LaRae Nelsen and Lora (Glen) Eldredge.
