Frederick was an English veterinarian and blacksmith by trade and worked for two years somewhere in Indiana before settling in Lynnville, Illinois near Jacksonville. He had a wagon making business in Lynnville at the time of his marriage to Jane Catherine Shirtcliff in 4th October, 1851. The panic of 1857 caused him a financial loss. He was living there in 1860 when the census taker came to call and he was shown as age 33 with his family.
In 1863, he moved his family to St. Cloud in Minnesota, where he then took a homestead in Roseville Township, Kandiyohi Co, Minnesota in 1865. He became a well known blacksmith. He was an excellent horseman and renowned for his skill. He would travel the 35 to 40 miles to St. Cloud and back in a single day. It is ironic that he should be thrown from a buggy and killed by a run-a-way team. He was age 57 years, 11 months, 18 days old at the time he died in 1883.
