Carl R. "Whitey" Corley, 86, of Shelbyville, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Waldron Health and Rehab Center.

He was born June 7, 1926, in Shelbyville to Chester and Alice (Herndon) Corley. He married Sue (Snider) Corley in 1948 and she preceded him in death Sept. 23, 2008.

Survivors include a son, David (wife, Beth) Corley of Fairland; two daughters, Lois Meltzer of Anderson and Helen (husband, Jeff) King of Edinburgh; brother, Norman Dale Corley of Shelbyville; sisters, Doris May LaSalle of Michigan and Mary Alice Richart of Shelbyville; six grandchildren, Sean Nolley, Summer Cox, Sara Dillon, Kendra Holzhausen, Blake Corley and Melissa Corley; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; four brothers, Robert, George, Harry and Maurice Corley; two sisters, Frances Louise Taylor and Lois Anne Corley.
Mr. Corley was a lifetime resident of the area. He graduated from Shelbyville High School.

He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Nevada.

Mr. Corley worked as a tool and cutter grinder at Allison Gas Turbine of GM, retiring in June 1988 after 37 years.

He was a lifelong member of VFW Post 2695 and American Legion Post 70.

Carl enjoyed the outdoors and working in his yard, as well as fishing and reading.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road in Shelbyville, and continue from 9 a.m. until services Saturday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fountaintown Cemetery in Fountaintown. Graveside military service will be conducted by local veterans' organizations.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of South Central Indiana in care of the funeral home.
