WILBERT L. ACUFF, age 78, of Strawberry Plains, TN, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2007.

He was born on January 20, 1928 in Powder Springs, TN, to the late Owen and Ada Dyer Acuff.

He graduated with the class of 1946 at Washburn High School, where he also played basketball and baseball. He holds a degree from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, where he joined the Columbian Literacy Society. He left the state to join the U.S. Army to serve for eighteen months during World War II. He was a long time member of Trentville United Methodist Church and served there faithfully many years as a Sunday School teacher. Wilbert's work in teaching service began in Union County at Luttrell, TN as teacher and principal and continued in Knox County, making a total of 42 years of teaching. He taught German and biology, and was chairman of the Science Department at Carter High School. He enjoyed working with the boys and girls, encouraging them and watching them become useful and outstanding citizens in their communities. Wilbert was a sponsor of the Key Club and worked many years at the concession stand at Carter football games.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Bruce Snodderly and Carl Snodderly; sister-in-law, Wanda Snodderly.

Wilbert is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Edna Snodderly Acuff; brother-in-law, Charles H. Snodderly and wife, Louise Davis Snodderly of Strawberry Plains; sister-in-law, Annette Snodderly of New Market; special nephew, Lynn Snodderly and special nieces, Fran S. Pyle, Katie Pyle and Rachel Snodderly.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2007 at the Farrar Jefferson City Chapel with Reverend Steve Evans and Reverend Dennis Johnson officiating. Family and friends will meet at Strawberry Plains Cemetery on Old Andrew Johnson Highway at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2007 for an 11:00 a.m. graveside interment service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.
