HOLYOKE - Edward J. "Gog" Sears, 84 of Holyoke, died on Sunday September 2, 2012 at his home. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late Edward J. and Mary A. (Doherty) Sears and was a 1946 graduate of St. Jerome High School. Ed also attended Holyoke Junior College and was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. He was employed as a letter carrier for the Holyoke Post Office 33 years, retiring in 1990. Ed was past treasurer of the Holyoke Postal Credit Union, a member of American Legion Post #325, and Knights of Columbus Council 90. A Life Member of the Saint Patrick's Parade Committee of Holyoke, he was very active with the Road Race Committee, and was a Rohan and O'Connell Award recipient. Ed was inducted into the Holyoke Catholic High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. Ed is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janice (Ellert) Sears, four daughters: Laurie Gaines and her husband Tim of Holyoke, Lynelle Russell and her husband William of Amherst, Lynn Sears of Holyoke, and Lisa Morin and her husband Donnie of South Hadley, eight grandchildren: Melissa and Jill Russell, Andrew, Daniel and Rachel Gaines, David, Jonathan and Sara Morin, step-grandchildren: William, Mark and Tina Russell, and a brother James T. Sears of Holyoke. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 11:15 from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church at 12:15 pm. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street in Agawam. The Sears family would like to thank Ed's special caregiver Elizabeth Fanning.
