During a training and evaluation flight off
Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, aboard B-29 Superfortress
#42-63410, the #2 engine caught fire and
orders were issued for a ditching.
A cross-swells water landing was made at
17:45 hours, but the aircraft broke in two and
burst into flames.
Five crew members were killed. A C-47 spotted the wreckage that evening but survivors could not be picked up until the following morning. The bodies of the dead men were not found.
The other airmen lost were:
1st Lt. Clifford E Kamph, pilot
2nd Lt. Joe Morris
2nd Lt. Steven Parella
2nd Lt. Norman J Thompson
