OBITUARY
VAN WINKLE

W. L. Van Winkle was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, November 19, 1842 and died at Goodland, Kansas, June 1, 1920, age 77 years, 6 months and 12 days. He was married to Jane Rizar, October 3, 1867, at Fairfield, Iowa. She died at Goodland, Kansas, February 20, 1905. Six children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. He moved with is family to Sherman county, Kansas in April 1886, where he remained until the present time. He was married to Elizabeth Sheer June 2, 1908 at Columbus, Kansas. He is survived by a widow, one brother, D. W. Van Winkle of Columbus, Kansas, one son, Frank Van Winkle, of Goodland, three daughters, Mrs. John Arendt of Goodland, Mrs. E. C. Baker of Burlington, Colorado and Mrs. Renel McLean of Goodland, Kansas, and eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The funeral sermon was preached Wednesday at 2:00 o'clock at the home on north Main Street, by Rev. M. R. Starbuck and interment made in the Goodland cemetery. The largest crowd of old settlers, early neighbors of the deceased, was out that has ever been seen at a Sherman county funeral for years.
