Newt Matthews, 67, of Spring Hill, Texas, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2012, at his residence. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 6, 2012, in the Chapel at the funeral home with Butch Boatright officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery east of Dawson.

Newt was born in Dawson, Texas, to the late O.S. Matthews and Flora Bankston Matthews. He was currently a supervisor for Glass Design in Waxahachie in the metal fabrication business. In the past he worked for Chattanooga Glass, Anchor Glass, Liberty Glass, and Dart Container. He was interested in politics and watched news reports on current events; however, he was most comfortable in his pasture taking care of his cows (his babies).

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Matthews.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Lynn, of Spring Hill; daughter, Tana Wade and husband, Jeremy, of Spring Hill; son, Kris Matthews and wife, Kami, of Silver City; grandchildren, Tyler Green, Rylan Wade, Stormi Matthews, Jace Matthews, and Aspen Matthews; brother, Bobby Matthews and his wife, Edna; sister, Billie Sanders and husband, Cecil; sister-in-law, Linda Matthews; and a number of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
