Charles Elmer Bigelow, 79, of Lamont, died on Aug. 24 at People's Memorial Hospital in Independence.

He was born July 6, 1895, the son of Otis A. and Edith Phelps Bigelow, on the home farm near Strawberry Point. He received his education at the covered bridge County School near his home. On July 11, 1917 he enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War I until his discharge in September, 1919.

He was united in marriage to Verneal Henry on July 6, 1923 at Manchester. They farmed near Mason City after their marriage until 1927, when they returned to the Lamont area. In 1933 they move to the family farm near Strawberry Point and then in 1934 moved to the town of Lamont. Charles worked as custodian at the Lamont School for 17 years and retired in 1962. He was a member of the American Legion Post at Lamont.

He is survived by his six children; Roselind Brown of Lamont, Edith Boll of Strawberry Point, Charles of Kings, Ill., Alfred of Salt Lake City, Utah, Orville of Yermo, Calif. and Richard of Oelwein, Ia., twenty eight grandchildren ten great-grandchildren, and three sisters' Jessie DeMoss of Earlville and Gladys Bunce and Bernice Penhollow both of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one grandchild, one brother and one sister.

Interment was in Campton cemetery.
