Joseph John Afonso, 83, of Goldsboro, formerly of Andrews, died Monday, July 9, 2012 in a Raleigh hospital. He was a native of Woburn, Mass., but lived in Clearwater, Fla. before moving to Cherokee County in 1979. He was owner and operator of Good Earth Realty for several years. Joe attended the Andrews Assembly of God.

He was the son of the late Joseph and Alexandrina Pina Afonso and the husband of the late Nell Rose Young Afonso, who died January 5, 2001. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Greg Ivey.

Surviving are two daughters, Pamela K. Ivey of Cullman, Ala., and Faith Seiglie of Goldsboro; a son, Joseph J. Afonso Jr. of Andrews; a sister, Alice Gajewski of Ludlow, Mass.; a brother, William Afonso of Oldsmar, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Adriann Ivey Basch, Collette Afonso Delgado, Celena Afonso Thrasher, Tina Afonso Birch, Heather Afonso, and Jonathan and Andrew Seiglie; and two great grandchildren, Preslie Basch and Callie Thrasher.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 14 in Hillcrest Assembly of God Cemetery in Hayesville with Revs. Clark Moss and Aline Mosteller officiating. Pallbearers were George, Andrew, and Jonathan Seiglie, Greg Ivey, Marc Delgado, and Roger Briggs.

The family received friends from 6-8 Friday evening at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Joseph John Afonso to Hearts for Heaven, Inc., 1264 Willow Oaks Trail, Matthews, NC 28104.
