Dorothea "Dora" Margaretha Claus was born on August 18, 1876 in Norka, Saratov, Russia. Dora was about age 12 when her mother died, and her father remarried in 1890 when she was age 13. She is listed as Dorothea, age 15, with her family on the passenger list of the ship Auguste Victoria, which arrived in NY in 1891. Dora married Adam Claus on April 21, 1896 in Kearney, NE and they had 3 children. Dora & Adam were first cousin; their fathers Johannes & Conrad Claus were brothers. On the marriage information I have for them, Adam's last name is spelled CLAUS & Dora's last name is spelled CLOUSE. In Adam's obituary, it states that Adam & Dora first settled in Sutton, (Clay Co.) NE, farming there. Adam & Dora are listed on the 1900 census of Kearney, Buffalo Co., NE living next to Dora's parents. At that time a 19 year old girl named Mary Michael is living with them who is listed as a "Foster Daughter", and Dora is listed as having 1 birth with no surviving children in 1900. Adam & Dora moved from Nebraska to Colorado about 1901. They had a daughter there in 1902, and they are listed as being founding members of the German Congregational Church in Windsor, Weld, Colorado on January 16, 1904. They returned to Nebraska sometime between 1905 to 1910, and Adam & Dora are listed with their family on the 1910 census of Sutton, Clay Co., NE. They moved from Sutton to the Grand Island area in 1916. They are listed on the 1920 census of Washington Twp, Hall Co., NE & on the 1930 census of Grand Island, Hall Co., NE. Dora is listed in the January 27, 1930 obit of her sister Mary Jacoby as "Mrs. Conrad Clouse of the east". She is listed in the March 24, 1931 obituary of sister Anna Propp as Miss Dora Clouse of Gering, Nebraska. She is listed in the November 24, 1931 obituary of her father Conrad as Mrs. Dorothy Clouse of Grand Island, Nebraska. Dorothea "Dora" Clouse Claus died on November 25, 1931 in Grand Island, Hall Co., Nebraska. She had traveled from Nebraska to Colorado to attend her father's funeral that was held on November 23, 1931, but she became ill from the altitude and was not able to go to the funeral. On doctor's advice she returned to Nebraska with her sister Katie on Wednesday, November 25, but she died that same night. Adam died on April 18, 1956 in Sutton, Clay Co., NE. Adam & Dora are both buried in the Sutton Cemetery, Sutton, Clay Co., NE. Dora is listed as Dora Claus, deceased, in her sister Katie's obituary in May 1946.
