Spc. Kyle R. Rookey, 23, of Oswego, N.Y., died Sept. 2, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan from a non-combat related incident. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
SPC Kyle R Rookey, 23, died Sunday September 2, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan while serving in the US Army. Kyle was based out of Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Co. He was born in Oswego and was the son of George E. Rookey and Carol Sue Slater Akers of Oswego. He was the husband of Victoria Melton Rookey of Colorado Springs, CO. Kyle was a graduate Oswego High School Class of 2007 and attended Monroe Community College and Cayuga Community College before joining the Army in March 2010. Kyle was in Cross Country in Middle School and Track at OHS. He loved to participate and work at the Renaissance Faire. Kyle was involved in music starting in elementary school and continued all through High School. At OHS he was very involved in Marching Band, Chorus and the Theatre with the Tech Crew In addition to his parents and wife, Kyle is survived by his daughter of Colorado Springs, two sisters and one brother all of Oswego, his Godparents of Oswego, his maternal grandparents of New Haven of Omaha NE, of Austin TX, several cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert E. and Margaret A. Rookey of Oswego. Calling hours will be held Wednesday 4-8PM at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Paul's Cemetery. On behalf of the family, the Oswego High School Class of 1981 has started a fund in memory of Kyle to benefit the Music and Theatre Departments at Oswego High School. Donations may be sent to Oswego City School District, Attn: Treasurer, 120 East First St. Oswego, NY 13126. Donations to a College Fund for Kyle's daughter may be made payable to Flora Kyleigh Rookey in care of Carol Sue Akers 112 Niagara St. Oswego, NY 13126. Information provided by Dain Cullinan.
