Virginia M. Backstrom, 71, of Murrysville, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1993, at her home. She was born April 12, 1922, in Taylor County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Alwyn Bosworth and Mary Bertha Haddix Gall.
She graduated from Morgantown High School, Morgantown, W.Va., and from West Virginia University with a B.S. in Home Economics. She was a school teacher for many years for the Franklin Regional and Washington Township school districts. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Murrysville, the Murrysville Women's Club, the AAUW, and Symphony East.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Herman Spurlock and her second husband, Melvin "Pete" Backstrom.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Frederick Spurlock of Vienna, Va., and David Brian Spurlock of West Chester; four stepchildren, Celeste Ann Backstrom, Kevin Backstrom, Karen Ayers and Marie-Jo Thum; one sister, Doris Gall Brown of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Murrysville. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the church.
