DURHAM - Mr. Ralph Alston Atkins, 89, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Atkins was born in Durham Co., the son of the late Jody Hanes Atkins and the late Julia Eva Latta Atkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eardeen Maynard Atkins; and siblings, Myra Shepherd, Aubrey Atkins, Mildred Burgess, John Atkins and Joe Atkins. Prior to retirement, Mr. Atkins was employed with Liggett and Myers Tobacco Co. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He attended Grove Park Chapel and, more recently, Berry's Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Atkins is survived by sons, Alston Atkins and wife, Sheila, Timothy Atkins and wife, Debrah; daughters, Julia Hawkins and husband, Terry, Yvonne Sells and husband, Eddie; sisters, Ruth Parrish, Faye Perry and Hazel Thomasson; eight grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham by the Rev. Craig Willingham. Entombment with Military Honors will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park's New Mausoleum, with the Rev. Dale Brooks. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12 to 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Youth for Christ Roxboro, 80 Danwin Lane, Roxboro, N.C. 27573.
