Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in Busto Arsizio, following his studies at the seminaries of Monza and Milan, Eugenio Tosi was ordained priest in June 1887. Joining the Oblates of Ss. Carlo e Ambrogio on October 24, 1889, he served as faculty member of the missionary house of the Oblates in Rho between 1889 and 1909, when he was appointed vicar general of the diocese of Rimini. Named bishop of the diocese of Squillace, he received his episcopal consecration from Cardinal Carlo Andrea Ferrari in Milan on April 16, 1911. Transferred to the see of Andria on March 22, 1917, he was promoted to the metropolitan archbishopric see of Milan on March 7, 1922. Pope Pius XI elevated him to the Sacred College of Cardinals in the consistory of December 11, 1922, with the title of Ss. Silvestro e Martino ai Monti. The Cardinal died of heart anemia following a long illness in Milan. A week before his death, twelve bombs were found in the basement of the archiepiscopal palace shortly before they were set to explode. Although he was out of the city at the time, it is believed that his heart was affected following the discovery. His remains are found buried in front of the Virgo Potens altar inside the metropolitan cathedral of Milan.
