St. Clair Morgan was born in 1831 in Nashville, the second son of Samuel Dold Morgan (1798-1880) an influential businessman. He entered West Point in 1848, but left before graduation in 1851.
Morgan enlisted as a Captain in the 10th Tennessee Infantry, which was mustered in at Nashville in May of 1861. He distinguished himself in numerous battles, but was killed in action at Chickamauga where the 10th Tennessee Infantry lost 224 men out of 328, amounting to more than two-thirds of the regiment.
