According to the 1900 U.S. Census Charles and his first wife, Maude, were living at 374 Elm Street, Gardner. Mr. Gates was a foreman at a chair shop and Mrs. Gates was a forelady at a trunk shop. Maude's younger sister, Harriette Graves, was living with the couple and she worked as a housekeeper.

Mr. Gates and his wife Ada were recorded in the 1940 US Census in Gardner residing at 52 Elm Street. At age 74 he was still working. He was a finisher at a silver factory.
