BAYARD - John Batt, 82, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard. He was born April 5, 1919, at Lincoln, the son of Henry and Mary (Popp) Batt. He was three years old when the family moved to Bayard. He married Frieda Bowers on June 4, 1944, at Bayard. The couple farmed in the area for a few years. Frieda preceded him in death in October of 1950. John stayed in the Bayard area raising his three children, working at the Batt Brothers Hatchery, Morrill County, the city of Bayard, and Great Western Sugar Factory. On June 26, 1953 he married Sophia Megas. They owned and operated the Toddle Inn for a number of years before moving the business to the south end of town, where it was known as the Tiger Den. They operated the business for 21 1/2 years. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Richard and Sharon Batt of Alliance; daughters Sharon Allen of Scottsbluff and Beverly Kolbet and her husband Leon of Hays Center; special friend Jean Strodtman of Bayard; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives Frieda and Sophia, four sisters, and five brothers. Mr. Batt's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Assembly of God Church in Bayard with Pastor Jeff Twombly officiating. Burial will be in the Bayard Cemetery.
