Dominican Republic President. Born Ramón Buenaventura Báez Méndez in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico, he was a member of a wealthy prominent family in the Dominican Republic. Educated in Europe, his political career began by helping lead the revolt that established the independence of the Dominican Republic, in 1843. Elected as President in 1849, he served until his term ended when his government was overthrown by a coup d’état because of his involvement in corrupt financial transactions, in 1858. When Spain abandoned the Dominican Republic in 1865, he was again made President in 1868 and was forced to leave office in 1874. He again served as President (1876-78) and was then exiled permanently to Puerto Rico, until his death at age 71.
