John Magruder, supervised agricultural extension agents
Funeral services for John W. Magruder, a retired supervisor of county agents with the Agriculture Extension Service of the University of Maryland, were held Monday in Hyattsville.
Mr. Magruder, who was 76, died last Thursday after a stroke at Prince Georges General Hospital in Cheverly. He lived in College Park.
He had been associated with the extension services since1928, serving as the Howard County agent until 1935, when he was transferred to the university. Earlier, he taught in the Howard County school system.
Mr. Magruder was named professor emeritus of agronomy when he retired from the University of Maryland in 1963.
Born in Gaithersburg, he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Agriculture in 1926 and later obtained a master's degree from Cornell University.
He as a member of the Maryland State Grange, Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity and the University of Maryland Faculty Club.
He is survived by his wife, the former Myrne Hendry; two sisters, Mrs. Willis L Cissel, of Woodbine, and Mrs. Garland Turner, of Rosanky, Texas; a brother, Harry W. Magruder, of Rosanky, and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggested that memorial donations be made to the Agricultural Development Fund of the extension service.
