Son of Samuel Slate from Virginia and Violena Hall from North Carolina, he married Sarah Elizabeth Kiser on 16 Nov 1862 and at his death he was the widower of Lurana Jane Wall.

Enlisted in Company G, North Carolina 53rd Infantry Regiment on 30 Apr 1862.

Surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, VA, on 09 Apr 1865
