Ebenezer graduated from Harvard in 1787; and from Dartmouth Medical School.
Deciding to pursue the profession of medicine, he studied with Doctor E. A. Holyoke and attended medical lectures at Hanover in New Hampshire. He began practice at Leominster in Massachusetts, where he also taught school.
Not finding sufficient medical patronage, he came to Hopkinton in the early 1800's, where he became successful in his medical practice.
He attained professional prosperity, and became identified in various enterprises looking to the welfare of the town and state.
He gave a great deal of attention to agriculture, and was a promoter of early attempts at improved culture.
He encouraged agricultural exhibitions, one or more being held on his premises.
He was the first president of the Merrimack County Agricultural Society.
Doctor Lerned was liberally disposed to the cause of education. He was the virtual founder of Hopkinton Academy in 1827.
In his will he left bequests to social causes.
He received the degree 'Doctor of Medicine' from Dartmouth College, and was the first delegate from the New Hampshire Medical Society to that institution.
In his chosen profession, he was distinguished; he was the first liberally educated physician in Hopkinton, New Hampshire.
