Marlow William Olsen was born Oct. 10. 1905, in Cylinder, the son of Martin and Clara (Moore) Olsen. He graduated from Cylinder High School. Mr. Olsen received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1928 and his Masters Degree in 1930 from Iowa State University, Ames, in Animal Husbandry. He received his PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park. MD.

In 1930, Marlow Olsen moved to Beltsville, Md., where he conducted genetic research in poultry for the U.S. government. He worked for the federal government for 42 years as a scientist for the Department of Agriculture. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, as a staff sergeant for the medical department and inspecting poultry for the Army for two years in Chicago, Ill.

Dr. Olsen is noted for developing the Beltsville White Turkey. In 1965 he discovered Avian Parthenogenesis in turkeys and had his studies printed in ARS-NE-65 in October 1975. He retired in 1975 after having several books published and lecturing in Europe on his research.

Marlow Olsen had made his home in Emmetsburg since 1980. He was a member of Gospel Hall Church, Cylinder. Dr. Olsen had one of the largest collections of antique clocks in the Midwest. He was a member of the Oscar T. Lang Memorial Chapter Clock Club in Minnesota and a member of the Columbia National Asssociation of Retired Federal Workers. (Emmetsburg Reporter, May 14, 1991)
