Among the most important of this state and county's natural resources are the people who, from statehood to today have contributed in their own way to prepare and preserve what you and I can enjoy and take pride in.

Mrs. E. (Mary) Savage grafted into Western Oklahoma's heritage, not only her accomplishments, but was constantly the foundation for many, who because of her love of others, have also made their mark on our Oklahoma heritage.

Funeral services for Mrs. E.B. (Mary Virginia Mabry) Savage, were conducted from the Hammon Methodist Church on Sunday, March 8, 1981 with an organ prelude beginning at 2:30 p.m.. and the services at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Albert Trent, Rev. Don Graham and Rev. Homer Williams officiating. Organist at the prelude was Homa Storm. Burial followed in the Red Hill Cemetery, Hammon, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Savage was born in Covington, Kentucky, July 4, 1887, and died Thursday, March 5, 1981 in the Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck at the age of 93.

She moved from Kentucky to Dallas, Texas, with her parents in 1896 then to a farm near Rhea, Oklahoma. She moved to Weatherford in 1905 where she was the first young woman to enroll in the college there. She taught school in Putman and Dill City before she was married to Bernard Savage on June 22, 1908 at Arapaho. They established their first home in Old Hammon where they owned and operated a general mercantile store in partnership with his parents.

In 1910 they moved the store to what is now Hammon and in 1912 they opened a branch stores in Forgan and Beaver following the development of the MK&T Railroad. she has made her home in Hammon since 1918.

Mrs. Savage worked with her husband in the management of the family business and continued to manage the ranching and business affairs following the death of Mr. Savage on September 3, 1949.

Mrs. Savage was an active member of the Methodist Church and was a member of the Red Moon Culture Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star, and had a special love for her Indian neighbors. Music and Art were important to her and were second only to her family.

She was chosen and enrolled in the Oklahoma Historical Society Hall of Fame in 1974.

Survivors include 3 sons, Eugene Savage of Cheyenne, Lew M. Savage of Patrick Springs, Virginia, and Ted Savage of Ada; 3 daughters, Mrs. L.L. Males (Lorena) of Cheyenne, Mrs. Glen F. (Glena Belle) Crane of Cheyenne, Mrs. Barney J. (Marge) Heeney of Topeka, Kansas; 1 niece, Mrs. Clarence (Mary Nell) Kline of Alameda, California; 1 brother, Harry C. Mabry of Los Angeles, California; 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a duaghter, Mrs. Ramey E. (Iris) Wilson in 1978.
