Hastings Navy Flier is Killed as Plane Explodes in Midair
Francis Hricko, 26, Wed Two Weeks Ago, Loses Life in Mishap

Francis D. Hricko, 26-year-old second class petty officer in the Navy from Hastings, was one of seven airmen killed Tuesday when a huge Navy patrol bomber exploded and crashed into Narragansett Bay, near Newport, R.I.

Body of Hricko, who was the radio operator on the plane, was recovered and removed to the naval base in Quoset Point, R.I.

Navy officials revealed only meager details of the crash. However, it was learned that the plane was on a routine training mission.

Married Only Two Weeks
Hricko had been back on duty at Quonset Point about two weeks after spending a furlough with relatives and friends in Hastings when he met his death. While home on furlough the flier married the former Mary Jane Weakland of Hastings. The ceremony was performed in St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Hastings.

Enlisting in the Navy in Jan., 1942, the flier received his preliminary training at the naval air station in Norfolk, Va. He later spent about 18 months in Newfoundland and returned to the States four months ago. Since that time he had (sic-been) stationed at Quonset Point.

Before entering the service Petty Officer Hricko was employed in the U.S. Treasury Dept., Washington, D.C. He was graduated from Hastings High School with the class of 1934 and while attending high school was active in athletics. He also played in the Northern Cambria Baseball League.

Born in Hastings
Born in Hastings Aug. 18, 1917, he was a son of Gabriel and Susan (Bacha) Hricko. He was a member of St. Bernard's Church, Hastings Volunteer Fire Co. and of Hastings V.F.W. Post.

Besides his widow and parents he leaves these brothers and sisters: Staff Sgt. James, serving with the Army in the Southwest Pacific; Betty and Evelyn, both of Washington, D.C.; Richard, Cleveland, O., and Helen and John, both at home.

Relatives have informed naval officials to have the flier's body shipped to Hastings for burial, but no word had been received last night. Military funeral services will be conducted by members of Hastings V.F.W. Post. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Easly Funeral Home of Hastings.
