Hugh was born on October 2, 1942, in Albemarle County, a son of the late Hugh Mawyer DeMasters and Annie Nathlalee Carter DeMasters.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ellis C. DeMasters.
He was retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard with over 30 years of service and was very proud to have been associated with the shipyard. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church at Amherst where he served as a transport driver for the church bus on Sundays. He was a Civil War and history enthusiast and loved his hobbies of working the family farm, hunting and fishing and carpentry and masonry work. His daughter, Denise D. Kenney and husband, Kevin, of Bel Air, Maryland, and his grandchildren, Collin Patrick Kenney and Erin Mackenzie Kenney, survive Hugh. He is also survived by three sisters, Shelby D. Kitchen, and husband, Riley, of Faber, Virginia, Diana D. Tyler and husband, Larry, also of Faber, Virginia, and Kathy D. Brockway and husband, Kevin, and their soon to be son, Luke Ellis, of Savannah, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Sue W. DeMasters of Charlottesville; and several nieces and nephews and last, but by no means least, his favorite friend and pet, Blue. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Bethel Baptist Church near Amherst with Pastor Dave Peters officiating. Interment will follow at the Rockspring Cemetery in Faber.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, August 31, 2012,at the funeral home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston, 434-263-4097.
