Garland was in Kentucky by 1815, when me married Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Richardson. In 1820, Garland took up a land grant of 238 acres in Hart County, Kentucky. He and Betsy stayed there until 1845. They had seven known children and they were all born in Kentucky, Virginia Anne, Azariah Rhodes, Isabella Florence, John Berryman, Elizabeth Ann, Garland A and Margaret Bush.
Garland brought his family to Collin County, Texas in 1845, when it was still a Republic. He was fifty-nine years old when he settled on a Peters Colony grant of 640 acres a short distance southwest of what was to be Lebanon.
Five years later, in the 1850 census, he is listed as blind. He and his family continued to live in this unsettled land and he continued to acquire land. He patented another 640 acres in 1854.
By 1860, Garland was 74 years old, and he and Betsy were living with their daughter Margaret and her husband Henry Brooks Miller. In 1870, they were living with their son, John Berryman and his family.
Garland died February 3, 1875 at the age of 88.
