JOHN "JACK" BARRETT WAS STATE SENATOR, BUSINESSMAN : Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

John "Jack" P. Barrett, a former St. Louis official, state senator and businessman, died Monday, (March 27, 2000) at St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights after a long illness. He was 84 and lived in Clayton.
A native of St. Louis, Mr. Barrett served with the Navy as a construction specialist in the South Pacific in World War II. After the war, he returned here and worked as a painter apprentice for Anheuser-Busch. In 1952 he founded Barrett Painting Contracting Business in St. Louis, a commercial and industrial painting company. Among his projects was the painting of the Eads Bridge in 1967. He later sold the business.
In 1952, he was elected to the state Senate, serving the 6th District in St. Louis until 1967. A year later, he was appointed jury commissioner for the city of St. Louis. He retired from that post in 1988.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ambruster Donnelly Funeral Home, 6633 Clayton Road, Clayton. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Luke The Evangelist Catholic Church, 7230 Dale Avenue, Richmond Heights. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Among the survivors are his wife, Dolores Miller Barrett; a son, Robert Barrett of Atlanta; two daughters, Connie Barrett of Creve Coeur and Mary Siebert of south St. Louis County; three brothers, Harry Barrett of St. Charles, William Barrett of Florissant and Robert Dean of Maryland Heights; three sisters, Margaret Lynam of St. Peters, and Patricia Jones and Joan Swartstrom, both of Florissant; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
