FOX, MABEL AURORA—Mabel Aurora Yates Fox was born September 19, 1907, in Ohiowa and passed away Monday, September 5, 1994, at the Long Term Care unit of the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 17 days. Mabel was the older of two daughters of Roy T. and Maud Warner Yates.

When Mabel was quite young the family moved to a farm in Chelsea township, where she later attended District 32, Chelsea School. She attended school in San Diego, Calif., from 1971-1921, when the family returned to Chelsea township and she attended the Ohiowa Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1926.

Mabel and Cecil Fox, son of Lewis and Etta Kirst Fox, were married April 14, 1928, in Sidney, Iowa. They made their home on two farms southeast of Geneva before moving into town in 1959.

Mabel enjoyed homemaking and crocheting and soon began to do sewing and alterations for others. This eventually led to her working for Walton Furs, making and inserting the linings in fur coats. She was an excellent cook and often baked her special orange rolls and other breads for the country club and others.

In 1978, Mabel and Cecil began spending winters in McAllen, Texas. They made many friends and thoroughly enjoyed 10 winters there.

As a child, Mabel became a member of the Chelsea E.U.B. Church, then the Geneva E.U.B., and the Geneva United Methodist Churches. She was active in church related activities and a member of the ladies aid society and currently was in the Dorcas Circle of the Methodist Church. She joined the Chelsea Woman’s Club shortly after her marriage and was still a member at the time of her death.

When Cecil’s health kept him homebound, Mabel became his loyal companion and care giver. Alter more than 65 years of marriage, Cecil passed away November 23, 1993.

With the help of granddaughter, Diane Deepe and daughter, Delores Johnson, Mabel was able to enjoy her own home until just three days before her death when she went to the hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister and brother-in-law, Velma and Ralph Nun; two sons-in-law, Dean Deepe and Gordon Johnson; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Deepe.

Surviving are children, Delores Johnson, Alvin and Virginia Fox, Dorothy and LaVern Novak; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Lucile Fox, and Florence Nun; nieces, nephews, and special friends, Becky and Derek Stamp, Lisa Kennel, Richard and Ruth Maresh, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Thursday, Sept. 8, with Rev. Charles Leypoldt officiating. Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied Delwin V. Myers who sang “Precious Lord, Take My hand” and the congregation who sang “Hymn of Praise.

Casket bearers were Richard Maresh, Charles H. Miller, Clarence A. Nun Jr., Steve Yates, Lynn Yates and Clarence Peetzke.

Interment was in the Geneva public Cemetery.
