While in the battle, he was shot. While going through his jaw, the bullet tore the jaw nearly off. His superior came over and told him he was brave and strong and then left him for dead. That superior was a minister who spoke of Luther during many church services. One day Luther was in one of those services and listened to the story. Some time after their chance meeting 40 years later, the minister gave Luther that bullet that tore off his jaw. Luther's wife is buried next to him.
