Co-founder of the City of Glendale. He moved there in 1882, purchasing 52 acres of land near the downtown area. The following year he invested in 13 parcels amounting to 123.5 acres and pooled his resourses along with Ellis T. Byram and George Phelon, the city's other original founders. He was instrumental in the organization of the Verdugo Water Company, helped in the founding of the Glendale Hotel, assisted in overseeing the narrowing of gauge railroad to Los Angeles, was the first president and general manager of the Glendale Railroad, and established the Bank of Glendale in 1905.
