Mrs. Dorothy Stratton, Wife of Asa Stratton,Jr

Age 20 years 7 Months 14 Days

I wish to thank you for posting the information on Dorothy Parker Stratton, mother of George Washington
Stratton, who with his little brother, Ebenezer Parker Stratton came with his father to Variety Mills in Nelson County,Va. after his second wife, Salome Parker, Dorothy Parker's sister died.

I did my papers for DAR using this line, but the registrar could find no direct line in Massachusetts nor Vermont using the Mormon Library, which necessarily did not mean there was none, for all able bodied men either served or pretended not to be Tories, and some left their plantations in Virginia and went elsewhere. I grew up in Nelson County, Virginia. My grandmother Harvey, Alma Frances Hight, was the dau. of Mary Catherine Stratton, md John Henry Hight and Mary Catherine (Molly) was the daughter of Frances Eliza Loving who was the daughter of James and Nancy Loving, first cousins who gave the land upon which the Court House in Nelson County Virginia sits.

James Loving was the son of Capt.William Loving and his wife, Elizabeth Hargrove and Nancy was the dau. of Capt. John Loving and his wife Neomy Seay, two captains of the Militia of then Amherst County, Virginia during the Revolution. Nelson County was separated from Amherst County, Christmas Day 1807 and records begin recording in 1808; Amherst County was separated from Albemarle County, and at one time was the western shire of Henrico County (Richmnd, Va.)

James Asa Stratton Jr. after the death of his two wives came to Nelson County and in 1833 He married Elizabeth Whitehead and had five more children. Asa Stratton signed the will of Neomy Loving, who would be the grandmother of the wife of his son George Washington Stratton.

I had always wondered what happened to little Ebenezer Parker Stratton & found by reading A BOOK OF STRATTONS from the Harvard University Library that he went to Mississippi becoming a prosperous merchant.

A George Washington Stratton was working for Appalachian Power when we put in the poles for electricity when we built our home in 1964 in the middle of his property on the land my father had given me in 1959, and across Hatt Creek where my Grandmother Harvey had lived. The Stratton Cemetery where GEORGE WASHINGTON STRATTON AND HIS WIFE, FRANCES ELIZA LOVING , their daughter, Mary Catherine Stratton and John Henry Hight are buried with other family members is about two up the road from where my house is located and Bethlehem United Methodist Church where my parents, Thomas Bland and my mother, Marion Belle Bowles and my grandparents, Charles Henry Harvey and Alma Frances Hight, dau. of Mary Catherine Stratton are buried. I have a picture of Mary Catherine Stratton as an old woman and one of her and John Henry Hight probably when they married and the centerfold of my Grandmother's family Bible, but DAR told me I had not proved who I was, so I ordered Mary Catherine Stratton's death certificate from Richmond and they told me I had enough, but I had already made plans to drive the 420 miles south down home I went up and took pictures of my gg grandfather& grandmother and my great grandparents tombstones, went to Lovingston , the county seat and got stamped by the Clerk other items, and when I handed in my papers the DAR registrar said it was the most complete she had seen. I could understand why DAR could not accept just the centerfold of the Bible. My father brought it to me two days before 1969's HURRICANE CAMILLE visited us. I had told my father to take it back to his home for my brother Thomas Bland Harvey, Jr. might have a son.

On Tuesday morning my nephew came over about 8:00am running around my house knocking on every blind:"Mary lib, wake up, wake up, there had been a flood in Roseland. Granddaddy's house is turned over and the Post Office has washed away." I could not believe what he was saying for the sun was bright, even though I knew the creek was up about 12pm the night before because I had almost to restrain my son, Jonathan, to keep him from going to look at the bridge he and my nephew were building so they would have a shorter distance to go visiting our kin all the old ladies in the neighborhood.

New Jersey had Sandy the devastation this past October and if we had had thousands along the path they would have been drowned because it was not forecast for Virginia. The people in the high rises in Biloxi, Mississippi did not
leave and had their last hurricane party. Little Possum Trot up there where George Washington Stratton lived and had his tanyard had several cars washed down from up the way. We lost about 140 people.
many of whom have never been found. Incidentally, my Grandmother's family Bible had that horrible mud that could not be washed off , so we had to throw it away, and of course, what DAR wanted was the date it was printed, but the centerfold has my grandmother's uncle, James Asa Stratton and her brother Bland Mc. Hight's signature as witnesses, so that in itself is one clue because James Asa Stratton, son of George Washington Stratton died Oct. 3. 1907.

There were other Strattons in Nelson County, Virginia when Asa Stratton,Jr. arrived and I have never tried to find whether they were related to the New England family, but they came about the same time. I would appreciate it if you could tell me whether the information listed for date of birth and date of death is on the tombstone and is legible, or did you get it from some other records?

My husband was born in Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and I have known before 1960 that I was related to many of the families in and around Lowell and Chelmsford, Mass. I might have gone to the cemeteries instead of the antique shops had I known I was related to many of the families who were friends of my mother-in-law.

They were all curious to meet her REBEL daughter-in-law . particularly the mothers of the girls Stephen had taken to the dances at Textile School.
