Heaven is rejoicing at the homecoming of J. Duwayne Brooks, 81, who passed away Monday, April 25, 2005 in Bowie.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 pm Friday at Central Baptist Church with Brothers Paul A. Henderson and Jim Turner officiating under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to their local missions group through Central Baptist Church.

Duwayne was born September 29, 1923 in Montague, Texas to Alfred Clifton and Tilda Anna (Veretto) Brooks. He married Ruby Helen Wheeler on December 19, 1943 in Bowie. He was a charter member of Central Baptist Church where he has been a faithful member for most of his life. He was an ordained deacon who served as music director and teacher for a number of years. In 1948 he went to work as the first salesman for Lone Star Gas Company where he worked for twelve years. In the fifties he and his wife, Ruby owned and operated the Bowie Furniture Store for seventeen years and served on the school board for six years. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a drill sergeant training solders. He enjoyed cattle trading, ranching and was active in buying and selling land.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clifton and Tilda Brooks; daughter, Glenda Fay Brooks Miller; and brother, Harold Eugene Brooks.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Wheeler Brooks of Bowie; son, Phillip W. Brooks and his wife, Beverly of Dallas; daughters, Linda Kay Gaines and her husband, Melvin Ray of Bowie, Cindy Jean Atchley and her husband, Billy of Big Spring, and Helen Rene Hopson and husband, William D. of Bowie; grandchildren, Julie Matusz and her husband, Damon of Rowlett, Amy Bohn and her husband, Gregory of Richardson, Sara Pickrell and her husband, Richard of Lethbridge, Canada, Brent Gaines and his wife, Angela of Bowie, Brandi Merrett and her husband, Joe of Decatur, and Zachary Hopson of Bowie; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Donald W. Brooks of Bowie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Phillip W. Brooks, Billy Atchley, Don Hopson, Zachary Hopson, Rex Cobb and Austin Phillip (Brooks) McDonald.

Honorary Pallbearer will be Donald Wayne Brooks.
