Anton Brunner was born in Austria in May of 1856, the youngest of the family. He was about 16 years old when he came to the United States with his parents. He had already been employed as a hat salesman in his native land and had intended to follow that occupation in New York City, but his parents insisted upon his coming west, and not wishing to be separated from them accompanied them to Pepin County. In Eau Claire, he learned the trade of blacksmith and horseshoer, and then established himself in business in Durand, where he could be found at his anvil every working day. His shop became a place to discuss politics.
He was one of the leading citizens of Durand, serving as alderman (councilman) for twelve years and as a member of the county board of supervisors. He set a record of never missing a meeting in 12 years.
He was responsible in no small way for the organization of the St. Peter's Aid Society in the parish of Durand. This served as a mutual assistance organization. He helped build St. Peter's Hall, which served as a meeting place for the group as well as a place for other activities. Both he and his wife were active members of the Durand Parish. Was a first officer of St. Mary's congregation in Durand when it was incorporated in 1883.
He and Gertrude Wingen of Dunn County were the first couple to be married in the little frame church of the Sacred Heart in Eau Claire on June 14, 1881. They had a family of nine children.
