The late Jacob I., Umbach was born in the Township of Woolwich on the 3rd of December. 1843 the son of John and. Catharine Umbach, then living in the northern part of Woolwich Township. There was at that time no opportunity of getting any schooling so his father imparted to him as much knowledge in the German language as he could. As he grew to manhood, Mr. Umbach realized the necessity of an English education, and by faithful application succeeded in acquiring a fair knowledge of English. In 1868 the subject of this sketch. was married to Mary Edler and together they took charge of his father's farm. where they lived for 45 years. Then he gave over the farm to his son. Samueland removed to Elmira, where for the next ten years he worked more or less at the carpenter trade. Five years ago he moved to Floradale, where his wife died four years ago. Since then he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J. B. Snyder.
