John H Frantz, one of Warren County's old settlers, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Irey, east of Gerlaw, January 8, 1910, after a long illness.
He was born in Allegheny County, Maryland, and when of age in 1857 he came west and settled on a farm in Spring Grove township. In 1864 he went to California and then returned as far as Nevada and engaged in the lumber business on the Carson River with headquarters at Virginia City. In 1866 he came back to Warren County bought a small farm near Gerlaw and engaged in raising thoroughbred Shorthorn catttle and Clydesdale horses. At the time of his death he was owner of several hundred acres of land in Warren County and was known as a prosperous farmer. He was son of Mr and Mrs Solomon Frantz, and was one of nine children, all of whom were dead except W. H. Frantz of Monmouth and H.M. Frantz of Chicago.
In 1860 he married Miss Annie Tinkham Porter, who died in 1903. To them were born eight children, three of whom survived him; Mrs. Jessie Gerlaw of Missouri, Mrs. Dr. Winbigler of Alexis and Mrs. Roy Irey of Gerlaw. Mr. Frantz had been a member of the Christian church for fifty years and of the Odd Fellows lodge for fifty-three years. His funeral was held at the Gerlaw Christian Church with burial in Monmouth.
