Thomas served as a Corporal, Company B, 8th Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He was wounded in the left clavicle at the battle of Five Forks on April 1st 1865 and was admitted to Douglas General Hospital in Washington D.C.

Thomas "Died Of Wounds" in the hospital specifically of Pyaemia ( blood poisoning ~ septicemia ) caused by the spread in the bloodstream of pus-forming bacteria released from an abscess) which was caused from the wounds suffered in the battle.
