Robert was the son of Thomas born 1825 in Ireland and Mary (Mitchell) Gamble born in 1836. Thomas may have immigrated in 1849. His siblings were John 1851, Margaret 1856, Mary A. 1858, Hester "Hettie" 1861, Elizabeth "Lizzie" 1861, Robert 1866, Sara "Sadie" (McClung) 1868-1948, Jessie 1873 all born in PA. For one day on May 2 in 1888 he played Major League Baseball for the Philadephia Athletics. He was a pitcher. The team lost the one and only time he pitched, but his at bat found him getting a hit and his average was .333. No one knows why he never played again. Shortly after he married Annie E. Haiflegh born Dec 1869 in Maryland. Robert served in the Spanish-American War enlisting on 28 Jun 1898 and was discharged 16 Nov 1898. He served in Co D. 8th Reg NGR. While serving he was sent to Puerto Rico where he came down with a tropical fever. He received several medals after the war. In 1906 he received a medal from the governor of PA for being a Champion Sharpshooter of PA. According to the 1900 census he and his family lived in Harrisburg Dauphin Co. PA. They had a daughter, Marianna who was born Apr 1892. He worked as a checkman for the Railroad.
In 1920 they lived on Magee St in Phila. He was a baggage master for the Pennsylvania R.R. on the route from Philadelia to Pittsburgh.
