Enid G. Burghard
(April 26, 1918 - August 23, 2012)

Burghard, Enid G. 94 April 26, 1918 Aug. 23, 2012 Enid died peacefully Aug. 23, 2012 at Farmington Square Assisted Living Center in Tualatin. She was born to Olaf and Karen Paulson in Moscow, Idaho in 1918. A crop failure in the early 1920s led the family of eight to pack all their belongings into a Model T open touring car with a trailer and drive to Mt. Angel to start a dairy. In 1938 armed with her Teaching Certificate from Mt. Angel Normal School and Academy, she signed her first teaching contract with Oregon City District 48 at $100 a month. Thus began a teaching career that lasted 45 years. Teaching in Lacy, Wash. in 1942, she met Virgil "Smiley" Burghard at a USO dance. Enid and Smiley were married in September of that year. At the end of WWII, she and Smiley moved back to Oregon City where she opened The Burghard Nursery School and Kindergarten in 1947. They bought their Harding Blvd. home in 1954 and resided there for 50 years. When Oregon City schools began public Kindergarten in 1955, Enid again signed with the school district as the Kindergarten teacher at the then new Eastham School. She taught an estimated 1500 students at Eastham until her retirement in 1983. Enid completed her bachelor's degree in 1956 and her master's in 1971 at Portland State University. Enid was a leader in updating kindergarten curriculum to today's standards. She was the first female teacher at Eastham School to wear slacks and was known for bucking the administration on behalf of her students. A newspaper article about a distant and unknown relative sparked an interest in genealogy that became her passion for 20 years. In the days before personal computers and easy Internet access to records, she and Smiley traveled to the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City, Utah and throughout the USA as well as a dozen trips to Norway and Germany to follow the family lineage and meet distant relatives. She studied the Norwegian language and taught herself how to use genealogy software on one of the first IBM PCs. By the time macular degeneration ended her past time in 1996, she had published over 3000 pages in seven volumes of family history going back to the 1600s. Her work is now being digitalized for future generations. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, her leadership, determination and intellect will be missed by us all. She is survived by her children, Kent Burghard (wife, Chyah) of Cordova, Tenn., Vance (wife, Wendy) Burghard of Sherwood; grandchildren, Ryan, Angela and Matthew; great-grandson, Gabriel; and brothers, Lewis Paulson of Woodburn and Olaf Paulson Jr. of Silverton. She was preceded in death by brothers, John and Raymond Paulson; sister, Joy Kaufman; and husband, Virgil "Smiley". The family thanks the staff at Farmington Square for their excellent care of both Enid and Smiley these last five years and Odyssey Hospice for their care as her life was coming to an end. A private family graveside service will be held at Valley View Cemetery in Silverton. In lieu of flowers, a donation to The American Macular Degeneration Foundation or The Oregon City Schools Foundation would be appreciated.
