Irish actor. Patrick Joseph Noel Purcell was born at 11a Lower Mercer Street in Dublin, and was educated at the Christian Brothers school in nearby Synge Street. His first job was as a carpenter, and it was whilst making some scenery for a stage production that he became interested in acting. He went on to appear in nearly sixty films, often as a sailor and nearly always with a long white beard. Among his best-remembered films are: "Moby-Dick," as the ship's carpenter; "The Millionairess," as Professor Merton; "Mutiny on the Bounty," as Seaman McCoy; and "Lord Jim," as Captain Chester. His last film was John Huston's "The Mackintosh Man" (1973). In 1991, a new road was built near his birthplace, and was named Noel Purcell Walk. It was opened by the Mayor of Dublin and by Eileen Purcell, the actor's wife. Noel Purcell is buried in the Northern part of the cemetery, in the section known as St. Oliver's, along with his wife's mother.
