Levoy "Chip" Mizell died at his residence in Perry, Fla. on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 from lung cancer.

He was born in Bogalusa on Jan. 5, 1927 to the late Rev. Jessie Martin Mizell (1890-1967) and Clara LaCaze Mizell (1894-1990).

He attended Bogalusa High School and played on the Lumberjack football team in high school. Upon graduation in 1945, he joined the U.S. Navy and served proudly aboard the USS South Dakota as a Radar Man Third Class at the end of WWII. He attended LSU and drove city buses and taxicabs. He graduated from LSU with a degree in forestry and was married in 1951 to Patricia McCants. They moved to Perry in 1954, and he pursued a career with Buckeye Cellulose for 36 years, retiring as reforestation manager with Procter and Gamble. He joined the Florida State Patrol Auxiliary and American Legion. He was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Perry.

He dearly loved God, his family, friends and country. His hobbies were fishing, floundering, hunting and reading. His fondness of life and the value of family and friends will forever be missed but remembered as his legacy continues.

Survivors include his son, Scott and Ann Mizell of Andersonville, Ga.; granddaughters, Tiffany Ann and Justin Hingle of Americus, Ga. and Tricia Marie Mizell of Macon, Ga.; nephews, Robert and Ginger Mizell of Loranger and Fred L. Mizell of Bogalusa; and nieces, Faye Mizell of Monroe, Brenda and Bill Armour of Bogalusa, Janet and Mike Fuller of Ball, Peggy and Norman Boyles of Bogalusa, Marie and M.J. Gillman of Ponchatoula and Lillian Gayle McCants of Bogalusa.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Patricia McCants Mizell (1930-2006), and son, Randall Lance Mizell (1956-2000).

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Fred Mizell (1913-1915) of Pitken, Joseph Coy Mizell (1918-1919) of Pitken, Ralph Lee (1914-1958) and Edith Mizell of Bogalusa, Melvin Jesse (1919-1995) and Ila Mae Mizell of Bogalusa and Milfred (1916-2002) and Mildred Mizell of Bogalusa; a nephew, William Ralph Mizell (1943-1980) of Bogalusa; his mother and father-in-law, Fred S. McCants (1908-1980) and Ruzzie B McCants (1911-1986) of Bogalusa; grandparents, Godfrey "Gruff" (1856-1935) and Fairzina C. Ezell Mizell of Washington Parish, Mizell Cemetery, Washington Parish, and Lois "Babe" LaCaze (1859-1938) and Mary Rose LeBleu LaCaze of Pitken, Blue Branch Cemetery, Pitken.

Funeral services were held at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m., preceded by visitation starting at 2 p.m. Interment will be held at Ponemah Cemetery in Bogalusa.

A special thanks from the family to Big Bend Hospice and to the caregivers for the outstanding care during the last four months.
